Orders Schools To Replace Native American Mascots, Team Names Schools in New York can no longer have Native American mascots or team names without risking serious consequences. In a letter sent to all school districts on Thursday, Nov. 17, the State Education Department’s Senior Deputy Commissioner, James Baldwin, ordered schools with a Native American mascot to find a replacement by the end of the 2022-23 school year. 1 Injured In Shooting Inside Capital Region Business (Developing) This story has been updated. One person is reported injured following a shooting inside a Capital Region business, authorities said. In a Twitter post shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, Troy Police said officers were on scene of a shooting located inside a store on Middleburgh Street between 5th and 6th avenues. 21-Year-Old Busted With Loaded Gun During Traffic Stop On Long Island, Police Say A 21-year-old man is facing weapons charges after he was allegedly busted with a loaded gun during a traffic stop on Long Island. Teandre Johnson, of Springfield Gardens, Queens, was arrested by Nassau County Police at around 11 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Elmont. Officers with the department’s Bureau of Special Operations pulled Johnson over after observing a Cadillac CTS driving southbound on Elmont Road near Belmont Avenue violating the Vehicle and Traffic Law, police said. 19-Year-Old Stabbed During Fight On Long Island, Police Say A 19-year-old man is recovering after he was stabbed during a dispute on Long Island, authorities said. Nassau County Police were called at around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, with reports of an assault in New Cassel, near Broadway and Swalm Street. Investigators said two men got into an argument that escalated when 67-year-old Samuel Charles, of New Cassel, pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim in his left forearm. CA Man Brandished Gun During Disturbance At Long Island Motel, Police Say An out-of-state man is facing charges after allegedly brandishing a gun during a disturbance at a Long Island motel. Nassau County Police were called to East Meadow’s Coliseum Motor Inn, located on Hempstead Parkway, just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, after getting reports that a man had displayed a firearm in the hallway. When officers arrived, they determined that Miguel Lara, age 31, of California, was the man who had prompted the call. Capital Region Man Admits To Attempted Sex Trafficking Of 14-Year-Old A Capital Region man will spend at least a decade in federal prison after admitting that he tried to pay for sex with a child. Saratoga County resident Bradley Boisen, age 26, of Waterford, pleaded guilty to attempted sex trafficking of a child Tuesday, No. 15, in federal court in Albany. According to the US Attorney’s Office in the Northern District, Boisen admitted that in April 2021 he paid another person $60 in order to have sex with a 14-year-old. Man Set Fire To Occupied Gym At Long Island College, Police Say Police are searching for a man accused of setting fire to a Long Island college gymnasium while people were inside, authorities said. The incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Nassau Community College in Uniondale, according to Nassau County Police. Investigators said the man set fire to a poster on a wall in the gym, which was occupied at the time, causing damage.
